Over the years, many teachers have abandoned teaching grammar due to its inability to improve student writing. However, students are still being held responsible for the knowledge on state tests as well as in college. The problem of how to address the growing problem of grammar instruction in a more efficient and effective manner has been addressed by experts in the field, Constance Weaver, Jeff Anderson, and Harry Noden, who have been touting the benefits of in-context grammar instruction for years. In-context grammar instruction means to use student reading and writing to teach the conventions of grammar. This study investigates the effects of using this method of grammar instruction an inner-city charter school for 7th through 12th grade children with ADD, ADHD, and Asperger's Syndrome. This study used primarily qualitative data to show that students were more motivated to write and their attitude toward the act of writing was improved by this manner of instruction over the course of a year. In conclusion, while students showed minimal improvement in regards to mechanics, their content showed great improvement and students were more willing to attempt the process of writing, specifically drafting and revision. More research needs to be done with this method of grammar instruction, especially taught by teachers experienced with in-context grammar and over a longer period of time, to provide a more definitive answer about its effectiveness in teaching grammar.

Education is an essential pathway to bridging the divide in educational attainment between Indigenous and non- Indigenous students. Most recently, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has recognized in the National Professional Standards for Teachers, that practising teachers must attain skills in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their communities. Clearly it is time for new pedagogical practices in Indigenous education that are implemented in partnerships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This book reports on a three-year research based study of action learning in schools that sought to enhance engagement with local Aboriginal communities, promote quality teaching and improve students’ learning outcomes. The school studies come from different demographic regions in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state and showcase the achievements and challenges; highs and lows; affordances and obstacles in the development and delivery of innovative curriculum strategies for teaching Aboriginal histories and cultures in Australian schools. The findings illustrate that engaging teachers in a learning journey in collaboration with academic partners and members of local Aboriginal communities in an action learning process, can deliver innovative teaching programs over a sustained period of time. As a result schools demonstrated that these approaches do produce positive educational outcomes for teachers and students and enable authentic partnerships with Aboriginal communities.

Arthur Roberts was a schoolmaster in country NSW (1861 to 1894) and it was education and the changing educational system that shaped his life. Born in the hop-growing region of Kent, England, his life and prospects were transformed by a wave of educational reform that carried him far from family, class and country. Roberts found himself on the frontier of attempts to establish a national school system in Australia. With a swiftly growing family - one with a severe disability - he was moved from one struggling district to another, fighting insolvency, ignorance, natural disaster and bitter sectarian divides. His letters requesting schoolroom furniture, upgrades to buildings and teaching assistants give some insight into his plight. Photographs and family folklore reveal a taciturn, deeply flawed man while the evidence of writings (as Scone correspondent for The Maitland Mercury) suggests a fiery intelligence and defiant pride. This is amplified by a portrait of Roberts in Havelock Ellis' autobiographical novel, Kanga Creek. The schoolmaster, Mr Williams, is portrayed as an educated and passionate agnostic who uses the pen name Anti-Humbug when writing letters to The Stockwhip, a journal possibly modeled on publications like The Bulletin.
