In dem Konflikt zwischen personlichen Vorstellungen und gesellschaftlichen Realisierungsmoglichkeiten werden dabei nicht selten Auseinandersetzungsformen im Grenzbereich der Illegalitat ausgetestet. Ein besonders eindruckvolles Beispiel hierfur ist in der seit mehr als 30 Jahren andauernden Entwicklung eines mittlerweile weltweiten Phanomens zu finden: Graffiti. Diese in New York entstandene Form des Graffiti ist der bisher deutlichste, haufig illegale, visuelle Eingriff in das urbane Leben und in jeder Stadt der Bundesrepublik sowie der ubrigen westlichen Wertegemeinschaft, unterschiedlich stark ausgepragt obligatorisch. In der Arbeit wird der Frage nach der Motivation der Writer fur ihr, sich haufig wiederholendes, nonkonformistisches Verhalten nachgegangen. Hierzu wird zunachst der Ursprung des Writings im, fur die Kultur mythischen, New York der siebziger Jahre ausfuhrlich erlautert, um dem Leser einen Einblick in eine Subkultur zu vermitteln, die mittlerweile, in haufig nur minimal veranderten regionalen Kontexten, zu einer globalisierten, subkulturellen Praxis Jugendlicher geworden ist. Es wird erlautert, wie die Writer innerhalb ihrer Subkultur als Methode der Subversivitat, und vor allem in deren Peers, soziale Anerkennung erfahren, und der Grad der Identifikation innerhalb der Writing-Szene zu einem hohen Masse positiv mit der aus dieser erfahrenen Anerkennung korreliert.
